Position Papers

In September 2007 the NADAV Foundation commissioned a position paper entitled "A Framework for Strategic Thinking about Jewish Peoplehood" (Kopelowitz and Engelberg, 2007) which provided an overview of the increasing use of the Peoplehood concept, including a history of the concept, an overview of intellectual schools of thoughts and a scan of the organizations in the Jewish world who are working with the concept.

In order to further develop the position paper, the NADAV Foundation funded the next step of this research with the goal of adding to the work done, a rich understanding of the practices pursued by Jewish organizations whose declared aims are the support and strengthening of Jewish Peoplehood.

This research will endeavor to respond to the following questions:

  • What are the core characteristics that stand at the heart of the Peoplehood paradigm as they appear in actual work being done in the field?
  • How do factors such as national or regional culture, religious, political and educational ideology, geographical location and area of expertise impact the Peoplehood paradigm and shape it to fit local conditions in which Jewish professionals work?
